Our monovarietal Syrah from "Rancho Boa Vista" vineyard, "La Serine" is the “massal,” mother-clone of Syrah that originated in Côte Rotie in Northern Rhône valley. This wine is an homage to the Northern Rhône style of Syrah: meaty, peppered, black and red fruits, generous acidity and ultimate freshness.
These are not bombastic, brooding wines that overwhelm, but are all about finesse and complexity and hence the DNA of "La Serine."
La Serine was picked on September 1, 2015. We were the first to pick our Syrah in this small vineyard. Rusty-colored sandy soil, warm days and cool nights are the environment in RBV. The vineyard sits in a swale that is amidst two large hills. It is protected by the first and latter part of the day's sun. Being huge fans of Northern Rhone wines like Cornas, St. Joseph and Côte Rotie, we knew that we did not want to make the typical overly-extracted, black, unctuous style of California Syrah, but rather a cool-climate wine that was fresh, nervy and delicious.
We picked early to maximize this style, assure ageability and balance. The wine was aged in neutral 225 Liter barrels for 11 months and bottled on August 11, 2016. The wine exhibits high tones of blue and red fruit, cracked pepper, saline/green and black olive tapenade tones, violets and smoked meat.
