Sans Souci

Roussanne Blend
  • Vintage: 2016
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Appellation: Santa Ynez Valley A.V.A.

Our White Rhône blend from Santa Ynez Valley. "Sans Souci" means "no worries," or "all good" in French. This wine comprises of two varietals: Roussanne (50%) and Grenache Blanc (50%). Roussanne is the queen varietal of Chateauneuf du Pape. It produces voluptuous, aromatic, fleshy, oily and rich wines.

These wines are a great alternative to the more mundane varietals you see in the market, while still offering complexity and a unique chance to drink a "fringe" varietal that is off the beaten path. The Roussanne was picked on August 30th, the Grenache Blanc on August 26th. We were the first to pick our Roussanne in “Camp 4” which is directly southeast of Los Olivos and owned by the Chumash tribe. It is known as one of the pioneering vineyards for Rhône varietals in Santa Barbara County. Sandy soil, higher temperatures (but with a 30 degree diurnal swing) and higher elevation make this a very interesting site. The quintessential Roussanne wine in our opinion is Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc. This wine is can be mostly Roussanne and usually will have some Grenache Blanc, Bourboulenc or Clairette blended for acidity or texture. We added some Rancho Boa Vista Grenache Blanc in the same manner, for additional freshness and acidity and to complement the rich, honeyed and fruit-driven nature of the Roussanne. Our pick was predicated on achieving maximum phenolic ripeness and fruit character, without accumulating too much sugar in the grapes. Acidity is naturally low in this varietal, so our pick was key to freshness and balance.

We first aged both fo the varoeties in stainless steel for purity of fruit, then they were racked individually into neutral barrique. The Roussanne and Grenache Blanc were only co-blended once they achieved their own level of individual maturity and were blended at 50%/50%. We racked back into stainless steel before bottling on August 11, 2016. This wine is rich, honeyed and very aromatic, with notes of apricot, orange blossom, and fleshy stone fruit, with a creamy, spiced finish.
